WHY THE SPANISH INPUT 1 COURSE IS DIFFERENT

The Spanish Input 1 course integrates lessons on Spanish phonetics with comprehensible input. Each phonetics lesson prepares you for the sounds you'll encounter in the comprehensible input lessons. These comprehensible input lessons are very different from others you can find online. Other "comprehensible input" videos just contain random words instead of focusing on the most common words. The Spanish Input 1 course focuses on the top 100 words in conversational Spanish, that is, the words you'll hear every single day. A few words outside the top 100 were included to make the dialogues more interesting, but they're still among the top 5,000 words. This means that every single word you'll hear in the Spanish Input comprehensible input lessons is 100% worth learning.

HOW TO USE THE COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT LESSONS

The Spanish Input comprehensible input lessons follow a 3-step method:

1) First you'll listen to the dialogue without subtitles. Listen ACTIVELY. Pay close attention to the sounds, and do your best to figure out the meaning. These dialogues have been recorded using natural connected speech, so you might not identify every single word. This is perfectly normal.

2) In the second step you'll listen to the same dialogue again with Spanish subtitles. These subtitles have two lines. The upper line shows the official Spanish spelling. The lower line shows you how the phrase is actually pronounced, using IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols. For example, if the upper line is "¿Qué es esto?", the lower line might be ['ke 'ses.to].

In this second step try your best to understand the Spanish directly, without translating it to English in your head. Also do your best to imitate the way the speakers talk, including connected speech. Pause, rewind and repeat as needed.

3) In the third step, you'll listen again with bilingual subtitles: Spanish in the upper line and English in the lower line. This helps you check if what you understood is not terribly incorrect. Don't worry if the translation is slightly different from what you understood! No translation can capture the full meaning of any Spanish dialogue.

These steps have been slipt into two videos: The first video contains steps 1 and 2, and the second video, called "with traducción", contains step 3.

Re-listen the dialogue many times without subtitles until you can understand it at full speed, without any mental translation.

For best results please select "English" subtitles. These have been manually created for this course to walk you through each of the steps. Do NOT turn on "auto-generated" subtitles or automatic translations.

Every IPA symbol you need for the comprehensible input lessons is explained in the phonetics lessons, so it's important to follow the course in order without skipping the phonetics lessons. Watch the whole course in order here:
