Especially when your head is buzzing with questions, and the person sitting across from you is someone who—after getting caught up in a financial manipulation scandal—seemed to have vanished from the public eye. Gibran Huzaifah, the former CEO and founder of eFishery, gave us that rare moment. He agreed to sit down, answer our questions, and explain.
In early May, Gibran showed up at the Tirto.id office alone, without any entourage. There was nothing dramatic about his entrance—none of that aura you’d expect from a public figure who just went through a storm. He stepped lightly off the back of an online motorbike taxi. The driver probably had no idea that his passenger was once the boss of a startup valued at over Rp20 trillion. At the peak of that valuation, with a 25 percent stake, Gibran’s personal wealth had reached a staggering Rp5 trillion.
Even his outfit that day fit the “modest” image often associated with him: a navy shirt, matching slim-fit pants, and a pair of Onitsuka Tigers worth under Rp2 million. A full, army-green backpack hung over his shoulder.
