解放碑步行街位于重庆市渝中区，1997年由重庆市渝中区政府投资3000万元，以解放碑（人民解放纪念碑）为中心将解放碑大十字地区（民权路、民族路和邹容路的共2.24万平方米面积）改造成中国西部第一条商业步行街——解放碑中心购物广场。
解放碑步行街东西与南北向街道控制在300～400米，符合人体散步的生理及心理限度。宽度为30～40米，使行人能站在街心观赏到两侧商店橱窗中陈列的物品。在高度方面， 解放碑步行街的楼高矮错落有致，但临街面的大楼一般的高度都在五六层左右，太高的建筑则利用裙楼和子楼削弱其临街高度。此外，步行街还很注重夜景灯光工程设计，灯光的效果使得空间层次更加分明立体，体现出独有的山城特色。逛街者既是观察者也是步行街的构成成分，作为参与者体味广场的内涵与意蕴。
解放碑CBD由“硬核”解放碑地区和“核缘”朝天门地区组成，承担商务、商贸双重功能。“硬核”部分东起小什字，北至沧白路、临江路、民生路，西至金汤街，南至和平路、新华路，占地0.92平方公里，“核缘”部分包括朝天门地区0.69平方公里。重庆解放碑CBD面积共计为1.61平方公里。
2019年，商务部印发《关于开展步行街改造提升试点工作的通知》，决定在重庆解放碑步行街开展步行街改造提升试点工作。2020年7月，解放碑步行街被商务部列入首批“全国示范步行街”名单。

In addition, the pedestrian street also pays great attention to the night view lighting engineering design, the lighting effect makes the spatial hierarchy more distinct three-dimensional, reflects the unique characteristics of the mountain city. Shoppers are not only the observers but also the components of the pedestrian street. As participants, they appreciate the connotation and implication of the square.

Jiefangbei CBD is composed of the "hard-core" Jiefangbei area and the "nuclear edge" Chaotianmen area, which bears the dual functions of commerce and trade. The "core" section starts from Xiaoshizi in the east, reaches Cangbai Road, Linjiang Road and Minsheng Road in the north, Jintang Street in the west, Heping Road and Xinhua Road in the south, covering an area of 0.92 square kilometers, and the "core edge" section includes 0.69 square kilometers of Chaotianmen area. Chongqing Jiefangbei CBD covers a total area of 1.61 square kilometers.

In 2019, the Ministry of Commerce issued the Notice on the Pilot Work of Rennovation and Improvement of Pedestrian Streets, and decided to carry out the pilot work of renovation and upgrading of Pedestrian Streets in Chongqing Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street. In July 2020, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street was listed in the first batch of "National Demonstration Pedestrian Streets" by the Ministry of Commerce.
