Brahms even concealed references to several of his own songs from the same period (notably from the Op. 105 cycle), so that the music often feels like sung lines without words. The three movements – a warmly flowing Allegro amabile, a central Andante tranquillo that briefly bursts into scherzo-like energy, and a graceful Allegretto grazioso (quasi andante) – form a compact, 20-minute arc of understated virtuosity and deep lyricism.
In this March 1972 Moscow recital, Oistrakh and Richter bring decades of shared experience and chamber-music partnership to the piece. Their reading has become one of the reference recordings of this sonata, often issued together with their equally legendary performance of Prokofiev’s dark First Violin Sonata from the same concert.
