I bought my Mazda5 mini minivan, 'Slink' a few months ago. I've been eyeing up how to build a platform in that back that folds over the middle seats when they are folded down to allow me to sleep in the back of the car and securely store all my gear.
When I bought it, it had roof racks on it, but since I hypermile and try to consistently get 28+ MPG when I drive, I took them off to reduce drag. My bike is able to fit inside fairly easily when the front tire is off, plus it's a lot more secure from theft and in terms of stability.
I tried sleeping in it without a solid platform under me and didn't sleep well due to the gap in the seats.
The reason for the convertible nature of it is because I have two kids that are in carseats and I need to be able to drive them around.
The end goal is to be able to fit my mountain bike between the seats whether the platform is stowed or folded down.
In this video, I cover my method of carpeting the plywood, some setbacks I experienced, and some tips on how to do this yourself.
Overall, doing this yourself would probably cost around $200. I spent less than $100 since my dad gave me some supplies.

The carpet - https://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficMa...
I did not actually use this exact one, since Home Depot didn't have any in stock. The important part is it does not have the grid-like webbing on the back that reduces the flexibility and it just has foam backing
