What is an Arena FPS? A love letter to a great genre of games

In an attempt to find the definition for the much-loved genre of FPS games, I found 3 defining features of Arena FPS games, and possibly why many deemed the genre to be one of the most skillful types of games .
1, A pickup-based weapon system with diverse aiming skills.
2, A set of intricate movement mechanics.
3, Arena-like maps with an emphasis on item control.
