South African Zulu potter Clive Sithole visits the Igbo women potters of Nigeria in the village of Umuwoyo Ensimba Nrobo. He wants to learn how to make an udu, the traditional women’s ceremonial clay pot drum.
The four main potters are Victoria Eze, Angeline Okoro, Grace Ugwoke and Uzor Amaka Ugwoke. The traditional indicator of their superior expertise is the natural plant fibre that they wear around their ankles. They happily show Clive the technique of preparing the clay, coiling the pots and firing them after they have dried naturally in the strong African sun.
