Today we’re exploring Ebenalp in Appenzell, Switzerland—home to the world-famous Berggasthaus Äscher.
Named one of the Most Beautiful Places in the World by National Geographic and featured on the BBC’s Places to Visit Before You Die, this cliffside hut is truly an Alpine icon.
From Appenzell, we took the short train ride to Wasserauen, then the Ebenalp cable car up to 1,640m. The trail leads through wildflower meadows, the prehistoric Wildkirchli cave, and even a 17th-century chapel before revealing the legendary cliffside guesthouse.
Built in 1860, Berggasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli is one of Switzerland’s oldest mountain inns. The views from its terrace over the Alpstein mountains are unforgettable.
