Cheetahs survive through specialized adaptations and strategic conservation efforts:
1. Speed & Hunting: Their slender build, non-retractable claws for traction , flexible spine for sharp turns , and ability to reach 60–70 mph in 3 seconds make them formidable hunters. However, they can only sprint for ~20 seconds due to overheating .
2. Habitat Use: They rely on open Namibian plains for unobstructed chases, avoiding dense vegetation that hinders speed .
3. Threats: Habitat loss, prey decline, and human-wildlife conflict (e.g., livestock competition) threaten survival .
4. Conservation: Protected areas , farmer-cheetah coexistence programs (e.g., reducing calf kills by 86%) , and increased tolerance among farmers help mitigate risks. Despite this, high cub mortality (up to 90%) remains a challenge .
Cheetahs’ survival hinges on balancing their speed-driven biology with human-led conservation. 🐆🌿
