PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of synthetic chemicals known for their persistence in the environment and the human body, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals”. Drinking water is a primary source of human exposure to PFAS, and studies suggest that prenatal exposure may affect child development and long-term health.
This overview from the MSU Water Alliance and 42PointSEVEN explains:
• What PFAS are and where they’re commonly found
• Why these chemicals raise environmental and public health concerns
• How ongoing research is helping to reduce exposure and better understand the risks
