STORYLINE
A Gadhafi compound, built in his honour by the then grateful residents of his hometown, lies in ruins on the outskirts of the embattled city of Sirte.
Nearby, the remnants of a scud missile base bakes in the desert sun.
Both are testaments to the fugitive leader''''s fortunes, as die-hard supporters battle former rebels trying to take one of his last strongholds.
Libyan fighters continue to press their offensive against the hold-out city, but here at the compound, the Colonel''''s battle has already been lost, brought down by NATO air strikes, and fighters who want to erase every last vestige of his 42-year rule.
The compound lies about 15 kilometres (nine miles) outside the city, built for Gadhafi''''s frequent visits to meet supporters.
Shaped like a Bedouin tent, it''''s now completely gutted and looted.
On a nearby rise, there is a scud missile base that was blasted by NATO strikes in the early days of the air campaign against the Gadhafi regime.
Once fearsome weapons litter the ground, a hangar with parts and vehicles is exposed to the harsh elements.
The once proud signs of Gadhafi''''s rule are left to rust in the sun-baked air.
