Ever wondered how the Army turns college students into commissioned officers? Join me as I visit The Ohio State University’s Buckeye Battalion to discover how ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) trains tomorrow’s leaders.
What Is ROTC?
ROTC is a college-based program that provides students with leadership development, military skills, and the chance to become an Army officer upon graduation. You can even try it out without any obligation—just take the Military Science courses and see if it’s for you! By the third year, if you decide to sign a contract, you could attend schools like Airborne, Air Assault, or Mountain Warfare, and you’ll receive a scholarship that covers tuition, books, and provides a monthly stipend.
Why Become an Officer?
Army officers are entrusted with planning missions, managing operations, and ensuring their troops’ well-being. It’s a big responsibility but also a tremendous opportunity for personal growth and career development. Officers come from places like West Point, direct commissioning for specialized professions, and of course, ROTC—which produces around 70% of new Army officers each year.
A Pathway to Leadership…and More
ROTC doesn’t just open doors to military service—it’s also a proven fast track for leadership training that appeals to civilian employers. For those seeking U.S. citizenship, ROTC can provide crucial support in navigating that process. Nursing students especially benefit; some schools reserve a portion of highly competitive nursing slots for ROTC cadets.
Advanced Camp and Beyond
At the end of junior year, cadets head to a 37-day Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, where they’re pushed to their limits and graded on leadership ability. Senior year brings major leadership roles within the battalion, preparing cadets to handle the responsibilities of an Army officer. After graduation, they commission as Second Lieutenants and head to branch-specific training.
