STORYLINE
There were wild celebrations among Democratic supporters across Europe early Thursday following Barack Obama's election victory.
Parties were held in American embassies in several European capitals and other buildings where people watched the election drama unfold.
At the US embassy in London, the Illinois senator's supporters erupted with delight as victory was declared. Some wept tears of joy.
"I'm ecstatic," said Robert Carolina of Democrats Abroad UK. "I've been waiting a very long time for this."
Glum Republicans paid tribute to their leader, John McCain.
"I think he has fought a very good fight," said Miki Bowman of Republicans Abroad UK. "He should be very proud of his efforts."
The US ambassador to London, Robert Tuttle, said the election campaign had been a triumph all round, describing it as "great for democracy everywhere."
Similar parties were also held in Rome and Berlin.
