As a kid, this song didn't make sense to me: The sleds I knew didn't have bells. (Bicycles had bells, though.) I wasn't much into beautiful sights. I still have no idea what "new bird" they're talking about. (And in my neighborhood, we didn't get bluebirds - though we did get blue jays, pigeons, cardinals, and robins.) Living in a town, I had never seen a meadow except in cartoons. I didn't know what a parson was, why would some guy be asking a seven-year-old if he was married, and what job he was he hiring for!?! (In retrospect, pretty creepy!)
But regardless of any anachronisticity or creepiness, it's fun to play on the dulcimer and has great chords - so please enjoy the video - and stay warm!
I recorded this on the first day of winter, and yes it did snow, but the show shown here was several years ago and a couple of feet deeper.
Though usually associated with old folk songs and tunes, the mountain dulcimer is a natural instrument for pop and rock music. In fact, I call it a more logical first stringed instrument than guitar -- with fewer strings and (usually) fewer frets, it just seems to me that there ought to be millions of kids wanting to play, if only they realized it was relevant to their music. I do these videos to inspire more people to play and listen to dulcimer music, in diverse, non-traditional styles.

Melody by Felix Bernard, words (not used here) by Richard Bernhard Smith. Probably made most famous by Bing Crosby, but sung by darn near everyone.
Technical details: Played on my Rod Matheson 3-string chromatic dulcimer, tuned DAD, played in the key of D. One channel of the dulcimer goes through a Headrush Pedalboard, using a rig that includes a bit of octave followed by chorus, delay, and reverb. On the other channel, I used an acoustic guitar simulator and a plate reverb.
