On 16 December 1989, a popular uprising erupted in the Romanian city of Timisoara against the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu. Within days, the revolution had reached the capital city, Bucharest. On 22 December, the Romanian Army joined the revolution and Ceaușescu fled the capital. The Bucharest Television complex (TVR) – centred on the national television tower – became the revolution’s broadcast hub and de facto command post. It also became a key target for forces loyal to the old regime. On 23 December, ITN's Paul Davies and cameraman Sam Gracey recorded heavy gun battles raging around the TVR compound between revolutionary army units and members of Ceaușescu's dreaded secret police, the Securitate. Only a fraction of the footage recorded by Gracey made it into the day's bulletins. Digitised by the ITN Archive team in September 2025, most of what follows has not been seen since 1989.
