Exploring the ABANDONED Manchester Roundhouse (Manchester, NY) [w/ crossthewords1221 & Matt Losier]

In the quiet Upstate town of Manchester, New York, the derelict ruins of a former railroad roundhouse sits decaying and deteriorating, as nature slowly reclaims it. Known as the Manchester Roundhouse, this structure once moved and repositioned locomotives coming in for repairs, maintenance, or storage. Built in 1916, this roundhouse was constructed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad, which also owned and operated a massive classification yard in Manchester—the largest one in the world at the time. In the 1920s, Manchester was a major railroad hub for Upstate New York, and this roundhouse could handle up to 30 trains for various services. The roundhouse operated alongside the massive rail yard for many decades, up until the 1970s when services slowly began to cease. By the 1990s, the Manchester Roundhouse was officially closed and abandoned, and it has remained that way ever since. Although there have been efforts to save this historic structure, it has nonetheless sat neglected for years, covered in graffiti and slowly deteriorating.

Interestingly, this was my second time in a row exploring this abandoned structure! I first visited the Manchester Roundhouse the previous day, alongside crossthewords1221 and Matt Losier, but we were compelled to return again and film a video there. This was such a unique site! Seeing the remnants of this major railroad infrastructure was truly fascinating, and I enjoyed walking throughout the endless industrial decay. Aside from the semicircle roundhouse structure, we also explored the turntable (which positioned the locomotives into bay doors), as well as a nearby brick building which likely housed staff offices and utilities. The grassy lot surrounding the property was quite overgrown, although there seems to have been some clearing of foliage. Nonetheless, this was one of the most unique abandoned sites I’ve explored in New York, and it shed a light on a once-thriving industry that dominated this region.
