The words "for" and "to" are both prepositions in English, but they are used in different contexts and have distinct meanings.

When do you use "to" in a sentence? Here are the main uses of the preposition "to":
"To" is used to indicate direction/movement, comparison, recipient, time limit, infinitives..., often followed by a verb.

When do you use "for" in a sentence? Here are the main uses of the preposition "for":
"For" is used to express a purpose, reason, recipient, duration, benefit..., often followed by a noun.

When expressing purpose: Use "to" + verb (infinitive) and "for" + noun (or gerund).
Example: I went to the library to study (verb).
Example: I went to the library for studying (gerund/noun).
Example: I’m exercising to stay healthy. (verb).
Example: I’m exercising for my health. (noun)

Understanding these core distinctions and common uses will help you choose between "for" and "to" more accurately in your writing and speaking. Remember to consider the context of the sentence and the intended meaning.

Learning grammar rules isn’t enough. To properly learn the differences between “to” and “for,” you need to practice.

If you make mistakes, that’s completely okay. I made a lot of grammar mistakes when I first started out, and even native speakers misuse common English words sometimes.

I hope the differences between “to” and “for” are clear to you now.

There are many types of prepositions in English, including prepositions of time, place, direction, manner and more.
