Welcome to Chapter 15 of General Psychology (PSYC 2301) at Cisco College. In this lecture, we explore what counts as a psychological disorder, how classification systems like the DSM organize symptoms, and why culture, context, and impairment matter when deciding whether something is “abnormal.” We walk through major categories of disorders—including anxiety, OCD and related disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, depressive and bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, dissociative and personality disorders, and neurodevelopmental conditions—and connect them to models like diathesis–stress that explain how biological vulnerabilities and life experiences interact. We also address stigma, media portrayals, and why a more accurate, compassionate understanding of psychological disorders matters for real people’s lives.
This video is based on OpenStax Psychology 2e and designed to support the weekly Canvas module. Please follow along with your textbook and slides as we move through the material.
