Guryongpo is a coastal town located in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in the southeastern part of South Korea.

“Japanese House Street” is an area where Japanese settlers established a community after the signing of the Joseon–Japan Trade Treaty in 1883, which opened the door for Japanese traders and fishermen to enter Korea for commerce and fishing activities.

From the early 1900s to the 1930s, many Japanese — especially fishermen from regions of Japan where marine resources were declining — relocated to Guryongpo to take advantage of the rich fishing grounds in the East Sea (also known as the Sea of Japan).

By 1932, records show that several hundred Japanese households — totaling a few thousand people — lived in this area.

A full-scale Japanese residential and commercial community was formed, complete with traditional houses, shops, public facilities, and a functioning local society. Guryongpo developed into one of the important fishing and commercial hubs during that colonial period.

After the liberation of Korea in 1945, most of the Japanese residents returned to Japan, leaving many of the houses behind. Over time, these buildings aged and deteriorated.

🏚️ Preservation & Present Day — From the Past to Historical Learning

Recognizing its historical value, the city of Pohang has preserved these Japanese-style wooden houses. Today, more than 47 restored houses remain, and the area is officially known as “Japanese House Street.”

One notable building is the former residence of Hashimoto Zengichi, which has been transformed into the Guryongpo Modern History Museum. It exhibits original furniture and daily household items used by Japanese settlers, such as a kotatsu (heated table) and a butsudan (Buddhist altar cabinet).

Most of the structures were built in the early 20th century (around the 1910s–1920s), and have been carefully restored to retain their authentic architectural details — creating a living museum atmosphere where visitors can experience the colonial-era lifestyle.

The narrow streets, wooden houses, sliding doors, and tile roofs make visitors feel like they have stepped back in time to the early 1900s.
