Traveling westbound on US Route 48 in West Virginia from the town of Wardensville to US-219 between the towns of Davis and Thomas.
This portion of US-48 from Wardensville to Davis/Thomas forms the eastern split of what has been built of Corridor H of the Appalachian Development Highway System. The ADHS is a system of highways lettered A to X from Mississippi to New York receiving interstate, state, or US signage designed to help bring new development and expansion opportunities to the Appalachian mountain regions. Many specific characteristics typify ADHS corridors, including thick mountain cuts and tall bridges, necessary to keep the highway at a safe grade of steepness, despite still having tall hills and long curves. Although these features do make ADHS corridors very expensive to build, it does make these highways among some of the most beautiful in the nation, and Corridor H is no exception.
The first portion of Corridor H was constructed in the 1970's from I-79 in Weston to the town of Elkins in West Virginia. The rest was put on hold due to controversy regarding the project. In the 1990's, the project was revived (thanks to Robert Byrd) and small segments of the highway broke ground over the last 30 years. Today, enough of the highway has been opened that there are only two disconnected segments. The portion of Corridor H covered by this video is the eastern segment, as aforementioned.
Currently, (unless congress passes that infrastructure bill they were talking about at one point) Corridor H is scheduled to be complete from end-to-end at some point in the 2030's. This delay is a result of both limited funds and legal settlements. When complete, US-48 will form a limited-access highway directly connecting Interstates 79 and 81. Until then, it is currently a half-hour ride from I-81 to Corridor H's temporary eastern terminus. Another 45-minute ride separates the two segments of Corridor H between Davis and Kerens. As a result, Corridor H is known by few and traveled by few, resulting in very little traffic on the four lane expressway, adding to the reasons Corridor H is a very pleasurable highway to drive on. With its beauty and loneliness, for road-geeks, Corridor H truly puts the "Almost Heaven" into "Almost Heaven West Virginia".
