In this Derby then and now I'm standing on the south side of Derby Marketplace with Derby Guildhall behind me. I'm looking north-west towards the bottom
of Iron Gate where Saddler gate connects with it.
When I planned out my then and now for this I made my notes using the war memorial as a reference point but on arrival I soon realised that it wasn't in the same
place as it was in 1935 so had to replan. The war memorial was moved 10 Metres north-east in 1993, it was made in 1924 and designed by Charles Clayton Thompson, sculptured by Arthur G Walker.
There are quite a lot of changes between these two views but some prominent buildings remain. A lot of the current view is obscured by trees, flower planters and the water feature.
Some shops you can see in the 1935 view are W.E. Watts, Cantor's Furniture stores, Hodgkinson, LLoyds Bank, Barlow and Taylor & Co Ltd.
Barlow and Taylor was built in 1924
Derbyshire Building Society moved into the Barlow and Taylor building, currently this is Nandos.
Notice how the entrance to the public toilets in the old view are surrounded by bushes and shrubs in pots. The Cantor's Furniture stores became Live Social.
Personally I prefer how Derby market place looked in 1935 to 2025.

Past & Present - in fading Photographs.
High quality resolution fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point. Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!
The presentations you can see here are the result of many hours of work put in by myself ensuring that the old and new photographs line up precisely, I don't publish any if I'm not 100% happy with the match.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime I'm publishing then on my YouTube channel like this one.
Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the YouTube app?
