What's with all the variations on Fernando Sor's Variations on a Theme of Mozart

This is the first in a series of videos about finding something new in old music. I first learned this piece over 40 years ago. But it's still a "reaction video," to steal the popular social media phrase. I have always found that if I want the music I play to come to life, I have to respond to it anew each time I play it.
Here I am reading through a facsimile of Fernando Sor's published version of his variations on a theme from Mozart's opera, "The Magic Flute." In this and later videos I will compare Andres Segovia's romanticised arrangement with Sor's original. The point is not to find some ideal (or even worse, "correct") version, but to just have fun discovering how the spirit of this music wants to show up right now, through my fingers, in this place and time (it's 2025 and I'm in Tucson Arizona) ....and on this guitar ....an amazing, much-loved and much-played Hauser copy made by Mikhail Robert.
This is how I interact with music I love. I've been teaching for over 40 years. If you want me to help you learn to play classical guitar, or to help you conquer technical and musical hurdles in your playing, contact me at [email protected].
