The year 1802 saw not only the publication of the three sonatas, Op. 31, but also the composition of the Second Symphony and the writing of the Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter to the composer's brothers lamenting bis worsening deafness. The third of the Op. 31 sonatas, the Sonata in E flat major, has become known to some as 'La chasse' or 'Jagd-Sonate', because of a supposed association with the bunt in the last movement. in four movements, it lacks a slow movement, instead of having both a Minuet and a Scherzo. The improvisatory first movement is harmonically adventurous, at times even foreshadowing Wagner.
The Grammy award-winning pianist Daniel Barenboim has been active on the concert stage since the age of seven when he made his stage debut in his hometown of Buenos Aires. Well known for his work with the East-Western Divan Orchestra, a group of young Arab and Israeli musicians, he is currently the director of the Berlin State Opera, La Scala (Milan) and the Staatskapelle Berlin. Barenboim is described as "one of the few musicians in the world today who could accurately be describe as legendary".
