I was curious if Li-ion batteries of different mAh can be combined in series to make a 24v battery pack. I connected four fully charged and balanced 2s 8.4v Lipos in series of different mAh to try and power an ebike. Will it work? This was just a controlled test. I also determined that the 24V controller will work with the four 2s LiPos in series. The reason why I did this test was because I only have two 2s 5200mAh and two 2s 6500mAh Lipo batteries, and I wanted to use them on an e-bike. I did some research, but couldn't find any clear information on whether this would work or not. Of course, the small homemade ebike only uses a 350-watt motor and doesn't draw much current, so I would not try this on a higher wattage motor. The homemade e-bike is 24v and uses a 24v controller, so two batteries would not be enough to power the bike. I needed to connect all four lipos to provide enough voltage to the controller. The controller is rated for 24V, but when all four 2s LiPos are connected in series, the voltage will be around 33.6V. The controller's 50V capacitors will handle the extra few volts, but this doesn't mean the controller will run on higher voltage. Also, it has a cut-off voltage of 24V.
After testing, the conclusion was that the 5200 mAh batteries discharged faster and warmed up more than the 6500 mAh batteries. The 5200 mAh LiPos have a 120c discharge rate, higher than the 6500 mAh with a 90c rating. I made sure not to drop the voltage of the cells below 3v. A 2s battery should never be droped below 6v. I do not recommend doing this, and making sure all batteries are of the same type and discharge rate. Do not try this at home, This was for entertainment purposes only, under controlled conditions.
I made the music in this video and used a synth. This was an older project and footage that I wanted to upload before it was misplaced or deleted. I have been working on new projects and will be posting them soon.
