Taliban at War | Rare Footage of 1990s Kabul After Militants Take Over | Archive Documentary (1996)

After the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, Afghanistan was
plunged into a protracted civil war as mujahideen
factions turned on each other, reducing Kabul to
ruins and leaving millions displaced. In 1994, a group calling themselves Taliban (طالبان;
"students" in Pashto) emerged from religious schools
in Kandahar, promising to end the chaos by enforcing
a strict interpretation of Islamic law
and restoring national unity. Drawing support from rural communities and
disillusioned Afghans, the Taliban gained popularity
for their swift justice, anti-corruption stance,
and ability to bring security. On 27 September 1996, the Taliban captured Kabul,
publicly executing former president Najibullah and
declaring the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Within six weeks of taking power, the Taliban
banned music, radio, television, cinema, and sports;
enforced strict dress codes; and barred women
from work, education, and public life. Due to the Taliban’s severe restrictions on media,
technology, and visual documentation, footage
from their first period of rule (1996–2001)
is extremely rare. The footage featured in this video, captured on 28 October 1996,
documents a brief moment between the Taliban’s
seizure of Kabul and the full enforcement of their
strict social controls across Afghan society.
