Beijing, China’s sprawling capital known for modern architecture as its ancient sites such as the grand Forbidden City complex, the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nearby, the massive Tiananmen Square pedestrian plaza is the site of Mao Zedong’s mausoleum and the National Museum of China, displaying a vast collection of cultural relics and The Great Wall Of China.
Offering a blend of ancient imperial history with modern innovation and vibrant city life, including world-class dining (Peking Duck!) and shopping. As China's second-largest city, it's a major hub for government, transport, and science, having hosted both the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics.
I was in Beijing On 3 September 2025, where Beijing staged its most significant military parade in six years to mark the 80th anniversary of victory over Imperial Japan and the end of the Second World War. Most areas of the city went into lockdown and for 24 hours we weren’t allowed out of the hotel with tanks rolling down the street in the early hours of the morning preparing for the parade.
