Precast concrete is known and loved – even the Colosseum was built with it. It’s made using forms and can be used for walls or ceilings. It’s a familiar solution, but it’s also heavy. The transportation and lifting costs can dent your wallet.

Cold-formed steel framing was perfected about 100 years ago. It can span very large rooms (maybe not the Colosseum though), and is really easy to use. Pre-punched holes give access for follow-up trades, and you don’t need a crew just to lift a beam. Due to its versatility, most-mid rise construction projects are suited for cold-formed steel, and it works great in conjunction with wood or insulated concrete forms (ICF).
