Chinese pictographic characters visually represent the objects linguistically associated with them.

In today's lesson, we learn:

林 (lín) = woods
森林 (sēnlín) = forest

Also utilizing the character for "wood", the character for "rest" is a pictogram of a person resting by a tree. You can see it here:

休（xiū）= rest

The Chinese character for "wood" is a pictograph of a tree:

木 (mù) wood
