Saint Stephen was one of the seven deacons appointed by the Apostles to manage charitable duties within the early Christian community in Jerusalem.
He was a powerful preacher "full of grace and power" who performed miracles and debated Jewish leaders with wisdom that they could not withstand.
Accused of blasphemy, Stephen delivered a bold speech before the Sanhedrin condemning his accusers. As Stephen concluded his defense, he looked up and saw a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He said, "Look, I can see heaven thrown open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." That vision was taken as the final proof of blasphemy to the Jews who did not believe Jesus was the Messiah. The crowd rushed upon Stephen and carried him outside of the city to stone him to death. He became the protomartyr (first martyr) of Christianity when he was dragged outside the city walls of Jerusalem and stoned to death around 34 AD.
In his final moments, Stephen mirrored Jesus by praying for forgiveness for his executioners while the future Apostle Paul watched over the cloaks of those carrying out the stoning.
