Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a two-day visit to Ethiopia today (December 17). Addressing the Ethiopian Parliament in Addis Ababa, PM Modi announced the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, highlighting the deep historical and cultural bonds between the two nations. He drew poetic parallels between India’s "Vande Mataram" and the Ethiopian national anthem, noting that both revere the land as a Mother. The visit was characterised by high-level "car diplomacy" with PM Abiy Ahmed and the signing of a crucial MOU on debt restructuring for Ethiopia under the G20 framework. To bolster future cooperation, PM Modi proposed a roadmap focusing on food security, health, and digital public infrastructure. India has also committed to doubling the number of scholarships for Ethiopian students and introducing AI training programmes. PM Modi also became the first global head of state to receive the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, the country's highest civilian award.
