Today we explore the violent Japanese woodblock print genre called "Muzan-e" (also known as bloody prints). We'll start with a brief survey of violent and sensational art in Europe and then we'll explore the origins of Muzan-e in Japan. The main proponent of this deviant style was the artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Yoshitoshi drew from personal experience, the turmoil going on in Japan, and his tortured mental state to create the infamous print series "28 Murders With Verse". Yoshitoshi and Yoshiiku produced 14 prints each of violent scenes. Despite being controversial, the series was very popular. We'll look at some of the other artists that contributed to this genre and other related series. #yoshitoshi #arteducation #murdernews #japan #ukiyoe #woodblockprints
