Enkutatash: Ethiopian New Year - 2018 E.C. (2025 G.C.)
Enkutatash, meaning "gift of jewels," is the Ethiopian New Year, a vibrant and deeply cultural celebration that falls on Meskerem 1st in the Ethiopian calendar. This date usually corresponds to September 11th in the Gregorian calendar, or September 12th in a leap year. This year, Ethiopians around the world will be celebrating the advent of 2018 E.C. on September 11, 2025 G.C.
Enkutatash marks not only the beginning of a new year but also the end of the long, rainy season, giving way to bright, sunny days and a landscape painted with the golden blossoms of the Adey Abeba (Bidens macroptera) flower. It's a time of renewal, hope, and thanksgiving. Families gather, share traditional meals like Doro Wot, and exchange gifts. Children often go door-to-door singing festive songs, receiving freshly baked bread or money in return. The holiday is also deeply spiritual, with many attending church services to offer prayers and gratitude.
On this special occasion, DEWOL MEDIA is honored to extend its warmest wishes to all Ethiopians around the world:
Happy New Year 2018 E.C.! Melkam Addis Amet!
May this new year bring you abundant peace, joy, prosperity, and blessings. May it be a year filled with renewed hope, good health, and success in all your endeavors.
