Lutenist Weiss knew Bach. Bach said he had learned lute in just 6 months & wanted to play for Weiss. He played behind a curtain, saying that he was too shy to play in front of Weiss. In actual fact, Bach played on an instrument that mimicked a lute and had a keyboard. Weiss was said to have been amazed at Bach's skill. The curtain was pulled back to expose the keyboard based lute.

Stephen Lochbaum has performed in the world’s most important venues including Carnegie Hall, The Paris Conservatory, The Ateneo (Madrid), The notable Neuhaus am Inn (Germany), and throughout the U.S. and Canada. As a chamber musician, he is known for his incredibly varied sets of repertoires. Lochbaum plays theorbo in early music settings, jazz, tango, flamenco, video game music from the Final Fantasy series, and newly commissioned music.

Dr. Lochbaum has led several university programs in the last 20 years, including Oklahoma City University where he ran the Celedonio Romero Guitar Institute and took students on summer concert tours to Madrid. He co-authored a guitar textbook with Dr. Bryan Burns and is continually dedicated to his study of pedagogy.

As a student at the University of North Texas (UNT), he was privileged to perform with Paul Leenhouts in the guitar/recorder duo, am villam columbae. Lochbaum earned an impressive array of competition wins at Indiana University, University of Louisville, The Florida Guitar Foundation, Texas A&M, The National Music Festival of Canada, and has been a finalist in nearly every competition in North America.

Currently, Lochbaum teaches privately in the DFW area and enjoys its thriving chamber music scene. Recently he has partnered with Joseph Kuipers of the non-profit Texas Cellos where he has significantly expanded the guitar and cello repertoire with many original transcriptions.
