The story follows five assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train who find out that their missions have something in common.

Is Bullet Train based on a true story? No—it is based on the 2010 novel Maria Beetle (titled Bullet Train in the U.K. and U.S. editions), written by Kōtarō Isaka. Unlucky assassin Ladybug (Brad Pitt) is determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs gone off the rails. Fate, however, may have other plans, as Ladybug's latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe—all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives.

In this recap, we'll see how Ladybug, a former assassin, is ordered to board the train, steal a briefcase, and get off. He refuses his handler's advice to carry a gun because he just got out of anger management and has renounced violence. But aboard the train, he encounters Lemon and Tangerine (Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson)—professional hitmen protecting the briefcase, The Wolf seeking revenge, a deadly schoolgirl assassin, and The Father searching for answers. As their paths collide in increasingly chaotic ways, what was supposed to be a simple job turns out to be a large conspiracy orchestrated by a crime boss called The White Death.
