While on exercise in the Pentland Firth, the volunteer crew of Longhope's lifeboat came across a calf stuck on the shore of an uninhabited island. Swona is home to a herd of feral cattle that get no human contact. As the tide was rising fast and only a small amount of beach remained, the crew decided to try and help the calf. The Y-boat (the inflatable dinghy kept on board the lifeboat) was launched and steered carefully into the cove. Once the calf was brought on board the dinghy, it was transported to a small natural harbour on the island. The crew landed the dinghy on the beach and chased the calf up the beach to be reunited with its mother.
