Discover how the Heart of England Forest is transforming Oak Wood into a thriving wetland habitat, supporting nature recovery.
When Oak Wood was acquired, it was identified as having huge potential for wetland habitat. In 2020, four ponds were created, each with varying depths, bank gradients, and surface areas to establish a diverse range of microhabitats within the wetland. Historic drains and ditches, once used to quickly remove water for agricultural purposes, were blocked and bunded, redirecting water to flow naturally into the new ponds. To maintain the dominant plant species around the pond, seasonal cattle grazing is used to keep the rushes grasses down. The cattle also create a mosaic of tussock and short turf, which creates more microhabitats and improves invertebrate populations through natural dung enrichment.
Watch this video to see the incredible progress of nature recovery at Oak Wood, and discover how this new wetland is bringing life back to the landscape.
