Albert Ferber's magnificent recording of Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Chopin Op.22, from a Rare Recorded Editions LP.
The Swiss pianist recorded the complete Debussy piano music in the 1950s and also recorded the complete Fauré, but he is scarcely remembered today. This terrific performance finds the pianist playing with a gorgeous singing sonority, sumptuous phrasing, beautifully voiced chords, an impressive dynamic range, and a burnished singing line. What marvellous timing, with transitions between variations being fluidly accomplished.
