Long before skyscrapers and neon lights illuminated their night skies, the cities of East Asia were built under the watchful gaze of celestial beasts.
Born thousands of years ago in Chinese cosmology and embraced in Japanese spiritual tradition from the 7th century, the Shijin, or four guardian gods, granted their protection and blessing to those who knew how to build their cities under proper auspices.
The Four Guardian Beasts—Seiryū, Suzaku, Byakko, and Genbu—stood as protectors of the cardinal directions, and symbolized the flow of energy, harmony with nature, and cosmic balance.
If you, too, love Japanese folklore and its wacky monsters, be sure to check my latest novel, BLOOD OF THE KAMI, a YA action-packed tale of friendship and bravery in the face of unique dangers, released April 2nd.
