Recently current prime minister Mark Carney made headlines when he said that Canada would no longer subscribe to a feminist foreign policy, marking a shift in rhetoric from the government of Justin Trudeau, which repeatedly called itself a feminist government. Amid the ongoing trade war with the U.S., Carney has also been building new partnerships abroad such as a billion-dollar critical mineral agreement with the United Arab Emirates, a country accused of supporting a paramilitary force in Sudan that has killed thousands of civilians.
So if Canada doesn't have feminist foreign policy, what kind does it have? Can Prime Minister Carney prioritize economic concerns while still backing international human rights? What kind of trade-offs will Canada have to make to chase more global trade?
Jeyan Jeganathan asks: Shannon Gormley, foreign-affairs journalist and Toronto Star contributor. Akaash Maharaj, Ambassador-at-Large for the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption and senior fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs.
