Materials:
2mm Classic Cotton String (Colour: Natural)
Driftwood (21 inches in length)

This pattern creates a finished wall hanging that is 14 inches wide, 50 inches in length.

*Please note: This tutorial focuses on the pattern not the double half hitch knot. If you’d like a slower, more in-depth tutorial on the double half hitch knot please see below:

Double Half Hitch Knot:    • Macrame For Beginners - 28 Days of Knots! ...

There are 3 sections to this piece. Each section consists of one main branch and 7 leaves. I will show you how to create the first section in real time. In an attempt to shorten this video a bit, the last two sections are 4x speed. If you wish to view these sections in real time, YouTube has an option for you to do this. At the bottom right hand side of the video click settings and change the speed to 0.25.

Cut 24 strands of rope - 23 strands of rope should be cut 4 meters in length, one strand of rope should be cut 5 meters in length. Fold the 5 meter strand so that you have 3 meters on one side and 2 meters on the other and attach it using a Lark’s Head knot to the left side of your driftwood (the 3 meter section should be on the left). Attach the remaining strands of rope to the right of that strand using Lark’s Head knots.

*Note: Attach your strands of rope a bit closer together than I have here. I reduce the spacing as I go.

Section 1 (0:11)

We will start by create 3 leaves at the top of your work.

Leaf 1
Count 22 strands from the left. Use the 22nd strand as your filler cord and tie 9 diagonal double half hitch knots moving down and to the left.
Move back to the start of your work and use the right strand as your new filler cord. Tie another row of double half hitch knots to create a leaf. When tying the 6 knots in the middle, leave a little bit of space between the knots that you tied at the top and the knots that you are tying now to create the middle section of the leaf.

Leaf 2
Count 12 strands to the right. Start by tying your first double half hitch knot 1 1/4 inches down from the top so that this leaf sits a bit lower on your work. Create this leaf using the exact same process as you did to create the first leaf.

Leaf 3
Count another 12 strands to the right. Tie your first double half hitch knots about 2 1/2 inches down from the top. Create this leaf using the exact same process as you did for the first two leaves.

Main Branch
We will now create the main branch as well as three small branches that will connect the leaves at the top of your work to the main branch. Use double half hitch knots.
I do not follow a specific pattern to create this section so tie your knots as you see fit or follow my method.
Once you get 9 strands away from the right side of your piece you will start to create the 4th leaf. This leaf is connected to the main branch so continue tying your double half hitch knots until you reach the right side of your work.

Leaf 4
Count 10 strands to the left. The 10th strand will become your filler cord. Tie knots to this cord to create the bottom of your leaf.
IMPORTANT Do not tie the final double half hitch knot at the end of your leaf - I’ll go over this in detail after creating the bottom leaves on this branch.

Leaves 5, 6 and 7
We will now create three small branches and leaves underneath the main branch.
I do not follow a specific pattern to create this section so tie your knots as you see fit or follow my method. Make sure you tie your branches first before you tie your leaves (as the branches sit above the leaves - if you tie your leaves first you won’t be able to go back and tie your branches).

IMPORTANT We want to make sure we are using the same filler cord for the three main branches. To do so we need to make sure that the filler cord sits on the outside of our work. This means that we will have to tie two different half hitch knots at the end of the leaf. The first half hitch knot is left leaning and the second half hitch knot is right leaning.

Section 2 (28:48) and Section 3 (36:21)

Repeat this process two more times. The second branch will start on the right and move down and to the left. The third branch will start on the left and move down and to the right.
