This video shows how I made a quick and easy slide out shower enclosure, it can also be used as an awning support. The insert can be easily removed and switched to the other side of the van if conditions warrant this change.
It utilizes five foot lengths of Unistrut cross bars attached to the factory Toyota rack. Inside of the Unistrut is placed a 3/4" diameter piece of metal electrical conduit. This requires a mild bit of expanding of the Unistrut maw, which is accomplished with a 3/4" piece of galvanized pipe gently hammered to spread the unistrut until the conduit will fit snugly into the Unistrut.
The 1/2" metal conduit frame slides easily inside the 3/4" conduit. The 1/2" conduit I made slightly longer, the extra length can be seen in the image of the insulated shower tube. This extends the length that it can be safely slid open.
This works with any roof rack crossbars that are made from 3/4" pipe, such as the Yakima crossbars.
The rack is then completed using a 1/2" copper "T" and short stubs of copper pipe which is then hammered into the conduit. Be careful to contain the solder flow when sweating the copper together, globs of solder prevent the conduit from fully sliding to the "T" fitting.
I used a cloth shower curtain attached with a variety of clips clamps and magnets—take your pick. Shower curtain rings could also be used. The welding clamps are good if your upright tent poles are thick and you want to secure the curtain to the poles.
The design of this rack was developed in collaboration with the Mini vanman. / @mini.vanman
