The Issue With Heroes

As great as heroes are in the world of fiction, are they really doing the best that they can do to save and protect people? I've grown tired of the whole 'you'd be no better than them.' Simply hearing those words, or any iteration of it, makes my eyes roll deep into the back of my head. Do heroes actually "need" to be better than their rogues gallery if their purpose is mainly about saving and protecting? Should it matter in the end? In my mind, I don't need to look any further than Batman and Red Hood to answer which approach is ideal for the safety of people.
