High Flying Gibbon Baby - Mum's Relentless Efforts to Keep Him Grounded

Continuing the mini series with the gibbons from gibbon's from the Zoo La Palmyre in France.

Dad (Chile) is hanging off a tree, just dangling in the air. Mum (Kaya) and their son are below. The little one is trying to grab Dad's feet. At first, Dad pulls away, but then grabs him with his feet. Take off, lol! Mum is having none of it and pulls the baby back down. Seconds later, there's another attempt and lift off again, but Kaya grabs her son right from his feet. The baby jumps up again, still trying to reach Dad's feet. "It's fun, Mum, just let me play." Another lift off and another pull down by Mum. The baby has stamina and doesn't give up easily, trying again and again until Chile has had enough and swings over to sit by himself. Don't feel sorry for him. Kaya has her reasons for not wanting Dad on his own with the baby! More next week.

White-handed Gibbons can have cream, brown, or black fur, regardless of gender or age.

Females give birth to a single offspring after a pregnancy of around six months. Babies begin eating solid food and usually leave their mother at about four months old.

Gibbons are arboreal and move spectacularly through a process known as "brachiation," swinging quickly from branch to branch and leaping heights of over 10 metres.

Males and females typically mate for life. They communicate through a combination of visual gestures and loud vocalisations. The alternating or simultaneous songs sung by both sexes serve primarily to mark their territory, which spans several hectares. The tone of these calls varies between males and females.
