STORY:

After ten long years, Claire was finally returning to the small countryside village of Ashmoor, where she had spent her childhood. Since her mother’s passing, she had never gone back—choosing instead to bury the memories deep beneath the noise of city life in London.

But everything changed the day she found the letter.

It was hidden inside an old wooden chest, tucked between the pages of a worn notebook. The date was just two days before her mother passed away.

"This house is no longer yours, Claire. It belongs to your memories now. And please… when the birds return, don’t forget to feed them. They’ll be waiting for you, just like I did."

Claire held the letter with trembling hands. That night, sleep didn’t come. By morning, her decision was made. The house in Ashmoor was still standing. Weather-worn and quiet, it had aged with grace. The garden was overgrown, the paint on the porch faded, but the plum tree in the back—the one her mother had planted—still reached toward the sky, leafless but strong.

Inside, time had stopped. The same creaky floorboards, the same faded photographs on the wall. The scent of old wood and forgotten summers lingered in the air.

Claire sat by the window, just like she used to. A chipped porcelain teacup—her mother’s favorite—warmed her hands. Outside, the clouds hung heavy, and rain tapped gently on the glass. Her mother’s final words echoed in her mind:

"When the birds return…"

As if on cue, a small robin landed on a branch of the bare plum tree. Then another. And another. Five little birds, silent but not afraid.

Claire felt her chest tighten. Her eyes welled up.

She stepped outside barefoot, letting the cold, wet earth soak into her skin. From her coat pocket, she pulled out a small bag of bread crumbs she’d brought from the city—half hoping, half remembering.

She knelt by the tree, scattering the crumbs gently. The birds didn’t fly away.

And in the rain, Claire cried. Not loudly. Just enough for the sky and the birds to notice. In that quiet moment, Claire realized something simple, yet powerful:
You can’t change the past. But you can make peace with it.

Her mother was gone. But the love remained—in every memory, in every corner of the old house, in the wings of the birds that had found their way back.

She wasn’t alone anymore. The house had waited.
So had the birds.
And so had she.
