Qingchi luogu 清池锣鼓 percussion ensemble music from Bijie 毕节市, Guizhou, southwest China

A mini-documentary about Qingchi luogu (清池锣鼓), a tradition of percussion ensemble music from Qingchi Town (清池镇), Jinsha County (金沙县), northeastern Bijie (毕节市), north-central Guizhou province (贵州省), southwest China. Jinsha County borders Sichuan province to the north, across the Chishui River.

Profiled in this video is Mr. Peng Haoyan (彭昊严 or 彭昊䶮), a native of Jinsha County who began learning Qingchi luogu formally in 2014, and who is an 8th-generation inheritor of the tradition of Qingchi luogu.

Qingchi luogu, which may be performed for weddings, funerals, or any other type of festival or gathering, has its origins in a Confucian ceremonial tradition called Tong De Tan (同德坛), and is said to have a history dating back more than 100 years to the Qing Dynasty. It is generally played by an ensemble of four (or sometimes five) people, who play a small double-headed barrel drum played with two sticks called pigu (皮鼓), a pair of cymbals called bo (钹), a small gong called douluo (兜锣), and a large gong called daluo (大锣). The drummer is the leading musician.

There are 15 traditional pieces in the Qingchi luogu repertoire, which are typically played in sequence (please note that the English translations are just guesses):

7) Ma Que Chi《麻雀翅》(The Sparrow's Wings)
8) Tan Hua《摊花》(Spreading Out Flowers)
9) Huang Long Gun《黄龙滚》(The Yellow Dragon Rolls)
10) Duo Qiu Kui《夺秋魁》(Winning the Autumn Championship)
11) Long Bai Wei《龙摆尾》(The Dragon Wags its Tail)
12) Long Deng Hui《龙灯会》(Dragon Lantern Festival)
13) Yi Feng Shu Pai Luo《一封书排锣》(A Proclamation [Announced by] an Array of Gongs)
14) Yi Er San Gan Chui《123赶锤》(1, 2, 3, Hurried Hammer)
15) Liangzi Xi Yue《亮子细乐》(Illumination of Refined Music)

After these 15 pieces have been played, a concluding piece entitled "Zonghe Diao"《综合调》, whose material is derived from elements of the preceding 15 pieces, is played.

In 2023 the tradition of Qingchi luogu, centering on Jinsha County, Bijie, was included in the Fourth Batch of the Bijie Municipality Municipal-Level List of Representative Items of Intangible Cultural Heritage (毕节市第四批市级非物质文化遗产代表性项目名录).

Additionally, in 2024 the tradition of Qingchi luogu was included in the Sixth Batch of the Guizhou Province Province-Level List of Representative Items of Intangible Cultural Heritage (贵州省第六批省级非物质文化遗产代表性项目名录).

Further, Qingchi luogu was included in the Jinsha County County-Level List of Representative Items of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
