We were given a PRIVATE tour of the Oscarsborg Fortress – inside the torpedo battery, up into the targeting tower, and deep into history – together with the current commander, Per Egil Grimstad.
He took us to several places that are normally off-limits to the public, and what he shows (and tells!) about that night, April 9, 1940, is incredible.

Had Oscarsborg not hit the Blücher that night, the King, the Government – and Norway’s gold reserves – could have been captured by the Germans in Oslo within hours.
Instead, the German cruiser Blücher was sunk in the Drøbak Sound. Over 2,000 people were on board. The story still lingers beneath the surface to this very day.

⚓️ In this episode you’ll get:

• We go inside the torpedo battery where the attack was launched – below the waterline!
• The commander shows us the original sighting and firing equipment: “When you see the bubble trail, it’s already too late.”
• We climb all the way up to the spot where the torpedoes were actually fired in 1940 (and HC faces his fear of heights 😅).
• You’ll see objects recovered from the wreck of Blücher: uniforms, a razor, a tuba (!), letters – even the name tag from the training clothes of one particular German soldier who later returned to Oscarsborg as a veteran.
• You’ll also learn about the jetty – the massive “hidden wall” under water that forced all ship traffic to the west side of the fortress.
This is Norwegian wartime history, told by the man who literally has the keys to the basement.

The underwater wall is 1,750 meters long, built from stone dumped into the fjord in the 1800s to force ships into the fortress’s line of fire.
