Canadian Museum of Nature researchers present their discovery and description of a new species of extinct rhino that lived in Canada’s Arctic 23 million years ago. Epiaceratherium itjilik is the northernmost rhinoceros ever found. The species name, itjilik, is an Inuktitut word meaning “frost” or “frosty”. The animal’s presence in the Arctic on Devon Island offers new insights about a migration event from Europe to North America across a North Atlantic land bridge.
