Today, I had the pleasure of joining fellow members of the MMSB community for a memorable expedition known as the Bali-nin, with Hooked Bali serving as our guide. On the first day, we embarked on an exciting squid-hunting adventure, and to my astonishment, some of the squid we encountered weighed up to an impressive 4 lbs! Their size and strength put a significant strain on my Bibigun rod and Shimano TP 5000 reel, making for a truly unforgettable experience.
Catching squid from a boat proved to be considerably more challenging than inshore squid fishing. The key to success lies in balancing your tackle, ensuring it has the necessary strength and sensitivity to handle these robust mollusks. Here are a few tips to improve your chances: patience is crucial, as is maintaining proper technique when setting the hook and reeling them in.
Squids belong to a group of mollusks characterized by their elongated, soft bodies, large eyes, eight arms, and two tentacles. They are primarily classified within the orders Myopsida, Oegopsida, and Bathyteuthida, although several other mollusks within the broader group of Neocoleoidea are also referred to as squid. These remarkable creatures can change color for both camouflage and communication, with some species exhibiting bioluminescence to aid in counter-illumination. Additionally, many squid can release a cloud of ink to evade predators. During our trip, we even had the honor of being "inked" as we carefully netted these fascinating creatures.
After our squid hunt, we shifted our focus to jigging around Bali's reefs, targeting rockfish. The session was slow to start, but we eventually caught a few coral groupers, whose strikingly vivid colors were breathtaking. Despite the slower pace of jigging, we were fortunate enough to land several decent Almaco Jack, adding to the day's excitement.
I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious Almaco Jack tasted when prepared as sashimi. The flesh was pure white, firm, and had a satisfyingly chewy texture, with no hint of a fishy aftertaste. It was, without a doubt, the best sashimi I’ve ever had.
