(28 Oct 1970) RR7043B BRITAIN: REVIVAL OF TIN MINING
The tin mining industry in Cornwall died not because
the mines were worked out but because of a world
slump in tin prices in 1890, which killed off most firms,
and then the Great Depression of the 1930s which
closed the rest. But the spiralling price of tin in today's
world market, coupled with new methods of mining
the ore, look like producing a second mining boom in
Cornwall. Already some of the old mines are being
reopened and big mining interests are watching on the
sidelines ready to make large-scale investment in the
mines if world prices rise even higher.
