How to change the accessory Belts on an EJ255 Subaru Outback XT 2.5L 5 speed manual.
Tools:
12mm socket deep well preferred as secondary, but short one req for lock nut
10mm socket deep well preferred
3/8 inch or 1/2 inch drive wratchet for above sockets
3 inch extension for above wratchet size
if using impact tools, may req swivel or wobble bit for upper alternate lock nut
belt inspection tips: belts will naturally be scraped down by pulley teeth over time, extreme tempature changes especially seasonally degrade belts faster, constant extreme sub freeze temp or above 90 deg F will degrade belts faster, wet conditions naturally increase slippage between belt and pulley at that time, either rain or humidity, but constant slippage when wet conditions means the belts need tightened or replaced. DO NOT USE BELT CONDITIONER OF ANY KIND!!! No matter what the bottle says all work on the same premise of an adhesive bonding agent spray that increases the tactic grip properties of the belt, which will decrease slippage at the cost of more micro stresses on the rubber each time around the pulley, which you guessed it, degrades the belt faster. it works more like a band aid than a fix. cracks across the teeth from inside to outside are normal over time. cracks at a drastic angle from in to out or in the direction of the teeth mean the belt is rubbing top hard against the pulley. either loosen tension small amount from this setting or check pulley for in and out play.
